Shots: All but one scene shot
We managed to complete most of the film, only one outstanding scene left to complete.
It had taken longer than expected to film, this was down to the fact we had altered the original story. We had changed the original story because we felt that the original story would not meet enough expectations required to meet those of the thriller genre.

shooting schedule-1st day

Time: 12pm-12.50pm

We did achieve all our aims and objectives, so overall it well. although, we did have to change the location of where the extras were going to bully Kelsey but this problem was overcome by changing their location to somewhere else in the building.

Our own strap line will be one that gives credible impression of our film and will be a concise and simple statement so that it will be easily remembered.
We are going to meet the conventions of the thriller genre and opening sequences generally however we may challenge some conventions by immediately creating an enigma from the opening sequence, so that the audience are engaged and interested in the film immediately.

straplines/taglines

Straplines/ Taglines

These are advertising slogans which are short, often unforgettable expressions, used in advertising promotions. These are used in an effective way so that the audience can remember the product very easily. We have identified what makes an effective strapline of which is the following:
-states the key benefits of the product or brand for the potential user or buyer
implies a distinction between it and other firms' products - of course, within the usual legal constraints
-makes a simple, direct, concise, crisp, and apt statement
-is often witty
-adopts a distinct "personality" of its own
-gives a credible impression of a brand or product
-makes the consumer feel "good"
-makes the consumer feel a desire or need
-is hard to forget - it adheres to one's memory (whether one likes it or not), especially if it is accompanied by mnemonic devices, such as jingles, ditties, pictures or film sequences on televised commercials
-Sounds good.

*Examples of straplines are :

-28 days later - “His fear began when he woke up alone. his terror began when he realised he wasn’t.” this constrasts itself and gives a greater insight to the plotline.

-Seven- “Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light.”
this links into a bibical passage which links into the plot of the film, if the audience do not realise that it isn’t a bibical passage it becomes very confusing.

-The Sixth Sense-”I see dead people"
this immediatley creates an enigma before the film has even started. this is because it’s impossible to see dead people. by doing this the creators of the film get the audience interested and engaged straight away.

-I am Legend- “The last man on earth is not alone”
this tagline immediately creates an enigma, it makes the audience question “why has it been mentioned that he’s the last man on earth” but then it contradicts itself by saying he is not alone.

-Panic Room- “It was supposed to be the safest room in the house”
again this makes the audience question to how it is mentioned that “it was supposed to be “ , why is not safe anymore. this links into the title , the panic known as place of refuge in times of danger. so the tagline vontradicts the purpose of the title of the film.

-The Pelican Brief- “Two Supreme Court Justices have been assassinated. One lone law student has stumbled upon the truth. An investigative journalist wants her story. Everybody else wants her dead.” this gives a greater insight into the plot and gives a short overview of the whole film.

Analysis of opening sequence.

The purpose of an opening sequence is to quickly engage the audience and make sure they are interested so they will continue to watch the film.

It is immediately made clear to the viewer that the clip of 'London To Brighton' is the opening sequence of the film, as at the beginning of the opening sequence 'London to Brighton' there is a black screen with a white title reading 'London 3:07 am'. So this shows it is just beginning, as it is obviously due to the titles also is London to Brighton there are many unanswered questions which is common in opening sequences.

London to Brighton- Opening sequence

We usually know when we are watching an opening sequence due to titles, also commonly in opening sequences there is a build up for enigma, and unanswered questions.

Key texts of a thriller film

Thriller Films are types of film that promote suspense, excitement, anxiety and tension. Thrillers are often hybrids, which are suspense thrillers. they are created to increase tension and suspense, that take the audience through fear. Thrillers come in very different forms e.g. murder mysteries, case thrillers, legal thrillers, erotic thrillers and many more.
characters usually include criminals, stalkers and innocent victims.

Techniques that are put into thrillers, that make them thriller genres:
extreme zoom shots, prolong cross cutting, quick cut montage, dolly zoom shots, quick cutting, close ups. These are used in many thrillers eg psycho shower scene, has quick cut montage. Thrillers also have many common themes for example, terrorism, political conspiricy, espionage, pursuits, dangerous romantic liasons, psychological crime, and oppressive but unseen supernatural occurrences.

The conventions of thriller genre

The conventions of thriller genre include the plot lines, characters and techniques. In addition to those sound and editing, e.g. quick cuts and camera angle changes, music that gives tension and appropriately used when needed. This can be to do with lighting, especially the use of shadow, mirrors and stairs are also conventions of thriller movies.
Although the film "phonebooth" is in particular a thriller which does not play to the conventions, it avoids darkness and shadow etc. the one way to link it to the standard conventions is that the audience hears and views the the story from the killers point of view.
Audience

The audience that may be drawn to our sequence are those who enjoy being thrilled throughout films and who find entertainment in the anxiety build up in thrillers.

We are focusing on targeting 15-25 year olds. Just becuase we are focusing on attracted them it doesnt mean that they will want to view the film so therefore we had to base it on a theme that we felt would attract that audience. We felt if we had created a religious thriller we wouldn't attract the audience that we wanted as we didn't feel they would be that interested in it. So we decided to create a physchological thriller as that is the audience we wanted to attract.

In certificate 15's, the language that is used has to be suitable and only certain words can be used if they are justified. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context but sexual activity may be portrayed but without strong detail. Also the scenes can be violent but the pain should not be continuously recognized and drug taken may be shown but it should defiantly not promote drug misuse. Weapons should not be glamorized and scenes such as suicide, hanging and self-harming should not consist of imitable detail. So we thought that this would be most suitable for the scene in which we are creating.

A PG certificate would be very inappropriate for this film as violence can not be used unless they are justified and the film can only consists of mild language and our film will have violence and strong language in it.

We thought an 18 would be too highly restrictive for this film as it does not have content which is too explicit.

We thought our opening sequence would be a bit inappropiate for a 12 certificate as it shows scenes which could be inappropiate for 12 year olds, like our last scene in which someone is dead.
Sub Genres

We have looked into the genre of thriller, into which there are sub-genres. We have identified some key sub-genres which are mainly used and well known in the film industry.
These include the action thriller- this usually involves a race against the clock. These types of films do go without some form of violence, explosions and weapons. These films sometimes contain elements of mystery and crime films however these elements are overpowered by the action, an example of a action-thriller is Mission impossible 2. In addition to that, there is also disaster thriller, these are based on a real or fake natural disaster which creates the main conflict, the disasters such as earthquakes, volcano eruptions, hurricanes and floods, an example of this is Titanic. Also, psychological thriller, these types of film are based on emotional and mental rather than physical until a subsequent violent resolution, this was the category in which Hitchcock was specialist in, with films such as Shadow of a Doubt.

Different sub-genres tend to appeal to different audiences due to the audiences taste.

Research into the thriller genre:

Alfred Hitchcock is one of most well known thriller directors and he had basically set the mark for the all the thriller directors to come after him, as he was one of the earliest thriller directors. For twenty years between 1940-60 he was nominated six times but never won the academy award. He is considered as the acknowledged auteur master of the thriller or suspense genre, manipulating his audience's fears and desires.
